Original question from Quora:

How much do you charge as a web designer or a web developer?

My Answer:

As much as people are willing to pay.

If you want to make money in a business you can’t be shy about asking for it and periodically demanding ever higher rates.

Here is one way to get to higher rates without freaking out about it too much.

Say your base rate is $50/hr. That’s way too low in most cases, but it’s good money if you don’t know any better.

First, you get someone to pay you $50/hr (or the equivalent) to build something.

Next, while working on the first client’s job, you go get another client and charge $60/hr.

Keep adding $10/hr to your rate with each client until you hear no maybe five or ten times in a row. Then maybe you’ve peaked and can back off slightly.

In reality, there are plenty of people willing to spend plenty of money to quality designers and developers.

The “going rate” is much higher than you think.
