People Skills: How do you make a person feel like the most important person in the world when talking to them?
Here is a weird trick to making anyone feel like the most important person in the world. You’ve probably done it without thinking at least once.
Have you ever met someone that is so interesting that you find yourself in a long conversation that spans hours?
Imagine in your mind you meet someone and you “fall in love at first sight”. You get to talking and you keep talking. At some point you never want to stop talking.
To you, in that moment, they feel like the most important person in the world and you treat them accordingly. You maintain eye contact, you listen to what they have to say, you don’t talk down to them or at them, you maintain rapport, you match their tone and behavior.
You do all the things needed to have a great conversation, but crucially, you don’t think about it as you do it. You simply do it because…
In that moment you believe that person is the most interesting person in the world. You are deeply interested in what they think and feel and you do the right thing automatically.
So the secret to making someone feel like the most important person in the world is to believe that person truly is and you’ll act accordingly.
Of course, you’ve already done this at various points in your life. When you’re young, your parents or siblings might be the most important people in the world to you and it shows in how you act.
If you’ve met someone and fell in love, you’ve probably done this too.
If you have a best friend, at some point they were the most important person in the world to you.
The point is, you can’t fake the connection. You have to believe it for them to believe it. When you do, it’s effortless.
