Original question from Quora:

Now that Quora is introducing ads to generate revenue, do you agree that top Content writers should get incentives?

My Answer:

No, top content writers should not get incentives. It would likely ruin a lot of what makes Quora great. I’ve seen other sites like Squidoo and HubPages try to incentivize content creators with money and it didn’t make them better.

Instead, it turned them into places where people go to maximize how much money they will make. If Quora goes that route, it will do largely the same thing.

Most people are in some way or another basically greedy. Once you include money as a motivator, people will turn Quora into the next great gold rush and quality will plummet.

You will start seeing people focus on what answers will make them the most money, not where they can give the best, most valuable answers. I don’t think anyone wants to see that happen.

The other thing is, as one of the most viewed authors in several categories over the last month, there is plenty of value to be had in linking back to my own website, articles, books and so on.

To me, I’d rather someone visit my website and maybe read my book than get paid a couple dollars in ad revenue share.

As a Quora user, I’d much rather the site not get covered in ads.

If Quora is smart, they will keep contributions (mostly) altruistic.
