Original question from Quora:

What are the tips to become millionaire quickly?

My Answer:

If you can pass the skateboard test, you can become a millionaire. What is the skateboard test? Glad you asked.

First, can you skateboard? If you can’t, then you can try the skateboard test. If you know how to skateboard already, buy a unicycle or a set of juggling balls instead. The same idea applies anyhow.

It’s simple. Go to Craigslist or a used sporting goods store and buy a used skateboard. You can get one for less than $50. You might want a helmet too.

Got the skateboard? Awesome, now watch videos like this:

to learn the basics of getting on a skateboard, pushing, and so on.

Now, go out to a nice flat space without big cracks in the pavement and practice getting on the skateboard until you can get on the skateboard and push yourself around a bit.

If you haven’t skateboarded before, the process should feel different and strange and difficult. This is good.

Practice every day until you can comfortably skate around on a skateboard. You don’t have to learn tricks or anything. Just learn to ride around and enjoy yourself. It might take weeks, but that’s fine it’s a skill you can use for the rest of your life.

If you stick with it to the point that you can skateboard, then you pass the test. If you substituted unicycle or juggling, then when you can do those fluently/comfortably you pass.

What does this have to do with making a million dollars? Everything.

Making large sums of money takes a lot of time, effort, practice, and along the way you have to be willing to be uncomfortable and learn new skills. You won’t get there doing what you are currently doing or what everybody else is doing.

If you fail the skateboard test, you will fail at making a million dollars. Why? It’s a lot of work. It’s not something most people are willing to put the time an energy into.

The hard truth is that on the way to making a million dollars, you will fall down a lot. Over and over again. 70% quit after one fall, 15% quit after two, 7% quit after three, 5% quit after four, 3% after five falls, and so on and so forth. Eventually there are a small handful of people with a million dollars because they didn’t quit.

All the tips and tricks people post on places like Quora are regurgitated nonsense. You want a shortcut. There is no shortcut to practicing the skills required to make a million dollars just like there is no shortcut to learning how to skateboard.

So, go buy yourself a cheap skateboard, learn to ride, and prove that you have what it takes to make a million dollars. If you can fall and get up and keep going, you’ll figure out the rest.
