Original question from Quora:

Why did Microsoft adopt BASIC (Visual Basic) but not adopt Python?

My Answer:

The reasons are likely historical. If you weren’t around twenty years ago, it might not make sense to you. So I’ll give you my perspective.

Visual Basic was created in 1991, the same year that Python was. Before that Microsoft had used BASIC on computers all the way back to the Altair 8080 which dates back to 1974.

BASIC also was used on Apple and many other computers. So, it makes absolute sense that in a world where most every programmer knew BASIC, that you would build your rapid application development tools using it.

Believe it or not, in many ways BASIC was the ruby, python, or javascript of its day.
